(New)MinoHD Pocket-size simplicity, make it easy for amateurs to use

Author: Jeremy Herbert

The new pocket-size digital (New)MinoHD camcorders I’ve been testing should make any amateur videographer—and those who want to be one—a capable shooter ready to share memories with friends or upload to YouTube.

The Flip (New) MinoHD is the latest camcorder from Pure Digital Technologies. I like the MinoHD, just as I’ve liked every incarnation of this product line. And because it’s 40 percent smaller than its predecessor, the MinoHD truly fits into a pocket.

The Flip Product range plug directly into a TV, use of a USB “arm” to attach to a computer, work with Macs or PCs, and offer simple controls for capturing and playing back videos.

But I prefer the (New) MinoHD. Everything you need, from capable software to storage, is built into the device.

The (New) MinoHD is sturdy. You can let 7 -year-old shoot videos; don’t worry if it falls to the floor.

But when you consider you’re not using a professional-grade video camera under ideal lighting conditions, the lesser-quality VGA shooting mode is fine. I made roughly six videos (between 30 and 60 seconds long) before running out of space.

To load the video onto a computer, extend the USB arm and plug it in. The built-in software makes the experience practically goof-proof, displaying your videos and then placing them in easy-to-find folders. You can also upload a video to YouTube.

The (New) MinoHD’s built-in software, on the other hand, allows one to stitch videos together, send them as e-mails and upload to a number of Web sites, including YouTube. It is more useful for folks who don’t want to mess with robust editing software.

To get the MinoHD to be as slim as a standard iPod, Pure Digital did not include batteries. Users need to plug the MinoHD into a computer via USB for charging. Although a charge lasts a long time what happens.

But where the MinoHD excels is in its simplicity. Pure Digital takes cues from Apple on how to design and package a product that most users, even technophobes, can learn.

When you turn on the MinoHD, the buttons light up to guide the user. The buttons include a trash can icon to delete videos, three for playback controls (forward, back and pause) and one to zoom in and another to zoom out. In the centre sits a red button to record videos. With one look, most users will figure out how to make and display a video

The Flip (New) MinoHD has become the No. 2 best-selling video camera (after the Sony DVD610), beating other full-service models from Sony, Canon and JVC, according to market

If you haven’t already flipped for the Flip, you might now.
